Village Talk: Whaleboats & Whaling with Graham McKay

Come to our July Village Talk to learn about the history and evolution of whaleboats and whaling with Graham McKay, a marine archeologist, boat builder, and Executive Director of Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury, MA.

As the Shop’s Executive Director/Master Boat builder, Graham is responsible for overseeing museum operations, program offerings, and the shop’s boatbuilding operations. Additionally, Graham teaches several boatbuilding classes and instructs the museum’s high school Apprentice Program - a program that he created as part of Lowell’s Boat Shop’s involvement with the whaleboat project for Mystic Seaport’s restoration of the Charles W. Morgan in 2012.

Prior to coming to Lowell’s Boat Shop, Graham was a Captain for the Ocean Classroom Foundation, an educational organization providing sea education and adventure for the young students aboard schooners  Westward, Spirit of Massachusetts, and Harvey Gamage. He has also worked as a commercial diver, fisherman, and fisheries scientist.
